What’s On Your Nightstand? April 21, 2008

Filed under: The World of Writing — lnuchellbooks @

I’ve been posting Fave Five’s for the past 10 weeks. I hope they have been helpful for building your reading list. But let’s face it, not all good reads come from the bestseller list (i.e. Everything Her Heart Desires—hint, hint). Between serving as an influencer for other authors, friends’ recommendations and books advertised on the many list-serves I’ve joined, my list is growing longer and longer. Add books on the writing craft and the pile gets higher and higher. And did I mention books I’ve purchased as “homework” for the Faith and Fiction Fellowship Retreat (click here for more information) I’m attending in August. I like to be prepared when I meet authors/presents at conferences; thus, I try to read at least one of their books.

So tell me what you’re reading now? Why are you reading it (business, pleasure, school)? How did you hear about the book? Are you enjoying it so far? Or if you’re in between books (like me), what’s next on the list?

I’ll go first….

1.    Re-reading Writing the Breakout Novel by Donald Maass (Need I say more?)

2.    Three fifty-seven A.M.: Timing is Everything by Kendra Norman-Bellamy and Hank Stewart (Conference homework)

3.    Murder, Mayhem & a Fine Man by Claudia Mair Burney (Claudia is one of the premier African-American Christian authors. Besides, who can resist a mystery and a fine man?)

Your time…

HAPPY READING!

A Course in Failure? April 14, 2008

Filed under: The World of Writing — lnuchellbooks @

Last week I received score sheets and judges comments from the ACFW Genesis Contest. I submitted the first 25 pages from my current WIP (tentatively titled “The Same Old No Good So-and-So”). I wasn’t upset about not making the final round (of course, it would have been a pleasant surprise).

One reason for my lack of disappointment was another email I’d received the day before the Genesis email. It prepared me for the judges’ scores and comments and reminded me that everything happens in God’s time, not mine. Not winning contests, rejections from agents/editors, stinging comments from critique partners, etc. (or whatever may be going on in your life) doesn’t constitute failure. It just lets you know your ________ (writing career, new job, college acceptance letter) will take a little longer.

*******

My writing journey has been a short one compared to the writers listed in the email:

Jack London (The Call of the Wild, White Fang) received six hundred rejection slips before he sold his first story.

Louisa May Alcott

, author of Little Women, was encouraged to find work as a servant by her family.Emily Dickinson had only seven poems published in her lifetime.

Twenty-one publishers rejected Richard Hooker’s humorous war novel, M*A*S*H.

Twenty-seven publishers rejected Dr. Seuss’s first book, To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.

In case my post hasn’t encouraged you:

A professor at MIT offers a course on failure. He does that, he says, because failure is a far more common experience than success. An interviewer once asked him if anybody ever failed the course on failure. He thought a moment and replied, “No, but there were two Incompletes. “

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways April 2, 2008

Filed under: The World of Writing — lnuchellbooks @

npm_logo_2008_final.gifOne of the first poems I recall hearing was James Welton Johnson’s “The Creation”. I remember my cousin Jeanette floating around my grandmother’s house arms outstretched (looking like Thelma Evans on Good Times) proclaiming “And God stepped out on space”. That poem (and Jen’s dramatic presentation) stayed in my memory bank, because fifteen years later I recited the same poem during the talent competition of a college pageant (I won, BTW).

Although I prefer to read novels, there are some poems and poets that stick in my mind. Most of the time, however, if I remember the poet, I can’t recall the poems they wrote or I can quote parts of the poem, but can’t tell you who wrote it. So in honor of National Poetry Month, I posting a little quiz to help you (I mean me) brush up on your poetry.

Match the poet to his/her work (Answers at the bottom of this post—don’t cheat)

1. Edgar Allan Poe
2. Emily Dickinson
3. Gwendolyn Brooks
4. Langston Hughes
5. Maya Angelou
6. Paul Laurence Dunbar
7. Phillis Wheatley
8. Rita Dove
9. Robert Frost
10. Walt Whitman
