Dancing on streets of gold July 26, 2008

Filed under: The World of Writing — lnuchellbooks @ 2:15 am

This week the writing world lost two valued members. First Award-winning Christian romance novelist Kristy Dykes died at her Jacksonville home of malignant brain cancer.  Once she was diagnosed in November, Kristy journaled her experience on her blog, christianlovestories.blog spot.com. When Kristy was unable to post, her husband, Milton took over the reigns.

I never met Kristy, but I could get a sense of her personality from the AFCW emails and her blog posts. Her emails were also signed ‘Greetings from sunny Florida’. Once the news of her homegoing travelled across the internet, the condolences spoke of her warmth, generosity, kindness, etc. Her husband said it best “My beloved is healed and is dancing on streets of gold. I will share soon about her glorious transition from my hand into the hands of her Lord and Savior.”

Kristy Dykes began writing in 1982 and produced 10 novels, including The Heart of the Matter, Room at the Inn and The Tender Heart. Her books have been on Christian best-seller lists and she won several awards: second place in the 2007 Barclay Gold, third place in the 2007 Inspirational Readers Choice Contest and third place in the American Christian Fiction Writers 2006 Book of the Year Contest.

To learn more about Kristy’s life, read this article from the Jacksonville Florida Times-Union.

Next, Randy Pausch, the Carnegie Mellon professor who became a phenomenon with his “Last Lecture,” died of complications from pancreatic cancer.

Pausch said that the now-famous lecture was never meant for public consumption, nor was it for his colleagues or students. It was for his two sons and daughter: Dylan, 6, Logan, 3, and Chloe, 2.

The Last Lecture (Hyperion, $21.95) has been atop or near the top of USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list since it was published in April.  It has been translated into 30 languages, and nearly 3 million copies are in print.

Women’s Fiction – Not just for Women Anymore? July 18, 2008

Filed under: Book Buzz, The World of Writing — lnuchellbooks @ 12:37 pm

When you think of the genre ‘women’s fiction’ or hear titles of books like mine (Everything Her Heart Desires), you probably assume that these are books written for women. Makes sense, doesn’t it? I’d say that 99% of my local book sales were to females. The only men who purchased one of the books were friends or relatives (most likely to see if they were mentioned anywhere in the book). But in the last two months, I’ve had 2 (non-friend/relative) males comment on how much they enjoyed reading Everything Her Heart Desires. I gave one guy a copy because he seemed so enthused to meet a ‘published’ author. I doubted he’d read it, but figured he could pass it on to a sister, mother, etc (word-of-mouth is the best marketing tool). Needless to say, I was surprised when I talked to him again and he started discussing actual scenes from the book. The other gentleman was a member of my grandmother’s church. He read his wife’s copy and told my granny to tell me how much he enjoyed it and we needed “more books like that”.

So I guess the next time I tell someone I write women’s fiction, I should put emphasis on men.
