A Lesson Learned? May 21, 2008

A few days ago while I was waiting on my breakfast (not breakfast in bed, but at a local diner), Diane Sawyer gave an update on Randy Paush. The name didn’t ring any bells, but I did recognize the title of his book, The Last Lesson, from my weekly Fave Five lists. As Daine reported, I remembered Randy and his story.

Randy Paush is the computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University who’s fighting pancreatic cancer. On September 18, 2007, Randy stepped in front of an audience of 400 people at to deliver a last lecture called “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.” With slides of his CT scans beaming out to the audience, Randy told his audience about the cancer that is devouring his pancreas and that will claim his life in a matter of months.

Randy’s lecture has become a phenomenon, celebrating the dreams we all strive to make realities. And now, in his book based on the now-famous lecture, Randy goes even deeper to inspire us all.

“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.”
—Randy Pausch

The GMA episode showed Pausch (accompanied by his wife, Jai) at Carnegie Mellon’s commencement exercises and pictures of Pausch at his daughter’s second birthday party. He says his next goal is to make it to Father’s Day, ‘hopefully, I get some good gifts.’

Randy Pausch’s life (and death) should be an inspiration for all of us. Put The Last Lesson on your ‘must read’ list.

Mystery and Romance—A Deadly Combination May 19, 2008

Filed under: Book Buzz, The World of Writing — lnuchellbooks @ 12:22 pm

Congratulations to my friend and mentor Sandra Robbins on the release of Pedigreed Bloodlines, her first book slated for release from Barbour Publishing in its new “Heartsong Presents Mysteries” line.

Pedigreed Bloodlines is a cozy mystery set in the fictional Smoky Mountain Resort town of St. Claire, North Carolina, and introduces Leigh Dennison as antique dealer turned sleuth. When Leigh Dennison’s dear friend and champion show dog breeder Addie Jordan is killed, Leigh goes on the hunt to sniff out the murderer. Leigh, who has never been a dog lover, finds herself as the owner of Addie’s kennel, which houses a puppy with a bright future in the show ring. Leigh must overcome one obstacle after another as she sets out to succeed with the kennel and find the person who killed the woman she loved like a mother. At the top of her suspect list: a homeless Vietnam veteran, a young Cherokee high school dropout, the owner of a rival kennel. . . and the man with whom Leigh is falling in love. As clues unfold to the killer’s identity, she makes another surprising discovery—there’s a reason dogs are known as man’s best friend.

A native of Martin, Tennessee, Sandra retired two years ago as an elementary school principal after 33 years in the education field. She says that although she is retired, God opened the door for her to become a full time writer. Now she can step out of bed in the mornings and head right to her computer.

Murder in Small Doses, the second in the Leigh Dennison series, will release from Barbour in February 2009.
